Web Photos That Reveal Secrets, Like Where You Live

Hi All!

Wow, two posts in one week. But when I come upon helpful information, I like to share it. Today, someone in one of my writing groups shared a New York Times article: Web Photos That Reveal Secrets, Like Where You Live. Here’s the link:  http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/12/technology/personaltech/12basics.html?_r=2&nl=&emc=aua21

Anyone who posts pictures on the Internet needs to read this article.

Here is a snippet: Security experts and privacy advocates have recently begun warning about the potential dangers of geotags, which are embedded in photos and videos taken with GPS-equipped smartphones and digital cameras. Because the location data is not visible to the casual viewer, the concern is that many people may not realize it is there; and they could be compromising their privacy, if not their safety, when they post geotagged media online.

How scary is that?

Do you take pictures with a GPS-equipped smartphone or digital camera and post them online? Do you even know if what you’re using is a GPS-equipped smartphone or digital camera? Have you ever heard the word geotag before?

I hope you found this info. and the link helpful!
Stay safe!

Thanks for posting this! I don't have an iPhone, Blackberry, or any device like that, and I usually only post pictures that I've found on the internet, but this is good to know! (And scary how insecure the internet really is!)

    He Shelley!
When I think of all the pictures my children have posted on Facebook I get the creeps. I don't think their phones have GPS capability. I'm guessing as a parent I should know this. One more thing to worry about!

I seldom post other than book covers and a single photo taken ages ago. I'll let my daughter and her children know.

somehow I'm not surprised. Weirdos are sinking to all new lows these days and technology just seems to keep helping them out. this is indeed very creepy. I don't use any phones for taking pictures, but will have to check out our digital camera. Creepy!

OMG. Yes, thank you for sharing, Wendy. My phone does have GPS so all of my future photos will be taken from the digital camera.

    Hope you are doing well.

    Abbi 🙂

You do have quite a fancy phone, Abbi. Impressed the heck out of Amy, Jen, and me!
